Gotta wonder about someone who forgets they have a houseguest staying with them, shoots first, asks questions later:

A Billings homeowner accidentally shot a 19-year-old man staying in his house late Saturday night.

Around 11 p.m., Billings police responded to a report of a shooting at 1328 Mirror Lake Lane off Lake Elmo Drive.

Sgt. Pat Curry said that the 19-year-old man was in the garage of the house making a phone call. The man was a family friend of the 50-year-old homeowner, who was letting the 19-year-old stay with him while he attends seminary school in town.

The 19-year-old was being quiet so as not to wake anyone in the home, Curry said, and the homeowner mistook the man for an intruder and shot him.

Curry said it looked like the man was shot in the chest.

Curry said the injury appeared to be non-life-threatening. The man was taken to a Billings hospital for treatment.

At press time, Curry didn’t have any information on what type of gun the homeowner used. Curry said the homeowner will probably not be charged with anything, unless the man dies and then a negligent homicide charge could be brought against the shooter.

Got that? It’s not negligence unless somebody dies. Good to know.

  1. You appear to have a “twofer”; another shooting–this one, fatal–in Billings:

Who says that gunzloonz are too stupid to learn anything. This guys smart enough to pull a “Zimmerman”.

    • Wow. “He aimed high to avoid hitting the car.” That kinda says it all right there.

Burglary is not a death penalty offense. But you know, Castle Doctrine, mah rahts, “Make my day” etc. etc.

How is this even “negligence???” The guy was armed and with intent to cause serious bodily harm or death. That’s 1st degree murder territory.

And yes, if it was a real intruder, then he’d have the defense of self-defense to protect him from conviction.

    These prosecutors are morons.

I remember a similar event in Nashville many years ago; I believe it was the same week a mother shot her 10 year old son to death when her Derringer fell out of her purse; they had been grocery shopping. This was before there was an internet, so no link, but this one’s more recent: .
