Yep. Their real demand is for something, anything, they can point at and claim as a victory so they won’t look like complete fools. If this were an ordinary negotiation and we were just in a stronger position, I might even be inclined to give it to them so they’d be willing to negotiate in the future. Since it isn’t, and they’re holding hostages, we can’t in good conscience give them anything. They need to lose and be publicly seen to have lost, so that they’ll be terrified of doing anything like this again.
Well, to be fair, perhaps the govt. would be worth shutting down for lollipops and ponies.

The Republicans remind me of my oldest, when he was in the Terrible Twos and just determined to be oppositional. He outgrew that behavior at the age of two-and-a-half; the Republicans are still stuck in that phase.

What they really want is to go back to 1928; when the wealthy were ramsacking the economy, only rich white heterosexuals had real rights, women were barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen, the coloreds tried to avoid being lynched, and gay people were still treated as sub-human worthy only of being killed if they dared to be honest.
