Nerves Have Been Struck

[UPDATE] 2:

Memory Hole:

The nation’s first Homeland Security secretary is airing some dirty laundry from the Bush administration: He says he was pushed to raise the terror alert level on the eve of the 2004 presidential election.

Hey, Ed Gillepsie: shut your pie-hole.

————————————

[UPDATE]:

Republicans are the problem.

This:

We have been studying Washington politics and Congress for more than 40 years, and never have we seen them this dysfunctional.

[…]

The GOP has become an insurgent outlier in American politics. It is ideologically extreme; scornful of compromise; unmoved by conventional understanding of facts, evidence and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition.

When one party moves this far from the mainstream, it makes it nearly impossible for the political system to deal constructively with the country’s challenges.

Nice of the Villagers to finally notice. This column didn’t get near the attention it should have.

————————————

Oh, how dare he! How dare President Obama steal the Republicans’ hook on which they have always hung their political hopes! How dare the Democrats claim ownership of a longstanding Republican campaign message!

You know a nerve has been struck when Republicans howl in protest over shit like this. John McCain says for shame! For shame! And all of the Villagers immediately fall in line.

Because really what he’s saying is, how dare they. And how dare he.

Yes, such things have always, always, been the perogative of Republican presidents.

Like this:

And this:

And this:

And oh yes, this:

Messages of bravado and machismo — such things have always been for Republicans exclusively! Most especially since the Vietnam War years, after which Democrats were portrayed as weak-kneed surrender monkeys, a lovely little piece of framing that the GOP successfully attached to the left for a generation. Every election we hear the same stories repeating that line, too: Democrats will get you killed. Democrats can’t be trusted to keep the nation safe. Only Republicans know how to do that. Only Republicans are muscular enough to have the support of the military. Only Republicans have a big enough dick. Look, here are the pictures to prove it.

That’s why Bush’s team photoshopped soldiers into his campaign ads and supporters spent millions to smear his rival, an actual decorated war hero, as a DFH who betrayed his country. Speaking of Photoshop: remember this?

And then they inflicted the Iraq War disaster on us all, turning that meme on its head. Along comes President Obama to take out the person Americans had been told was Public Enemy Number One. Obama did it, not Bush. And here we are nearly one year later and Republicans are crying into their hankies about it? Telling the Democrats they can’t brag about it? After all of the Republican grandstanding, flag waving, and fearmongering?

Fuck that shit. Trying to take away the Democrats’ bumper sticker?

Not on your life.

    Beale,

The RePiggery has nothing – no ideas, no thoughts, no suggestions, only lies, smear and hate. Time for them to go the way of the dinosaur – that is all they are – EXTINCT.

unfortunate, but scum quite often floats to the top.

So we should be proud that a Democrat has murdered an accused criminal without benefit of trial? Is American now reduced to a political competition to see how many wars we can start or how many people we can kill?

Glenn Greenwald probably makes this point better than I do: http://www.salon.com/2012/04/29/celebrating_our_warrior_president/

    • Yeah that’s hilarious. Glenn Greenwald lives in an alternate universe as fantastical as that inhabited by the Teanuts. In case you hadn’t noticed, we can’t even get trials for GITMO prisoners. So if you want to think the symbolic if not actual leader of global Jihad was going to get rounded up and put on trial, please hand me what you’re smoking.

Hey, I’m glad the asshole is gone. The time to have dealt with him “reasonably” might have been back when we were funding him and training his army to take on the Soviets. Mistakes were made. We created a monster.

So we’ve come to a point in this country when a devotion to the Constitution and the rule of law is seen as a fantasy. We did create the Bin Laden monster and there was a bipartisan consensus that we should take any action and side with any tyrant or murderer in order to counter the “threat” of the “global Communist conspiracy”. Instead of learning from those mistakes we amplify them. Instead of using the fig leaf of proxy armies, we now let kids in Nebraska kill entire innocent families with their video consoles and call it foreign policy.

Either we support the Constitution and the rule of law no matter who violates it, or we have no right to complain when the “land of the free” becomes a police state. Tyranny only gets worse when you ignore it.

    • Blah blah CONSTITUTION blah blah … Wake up and read a fucking history book, Chuckles. America has never been a place of unicorns farting rainbows, it sure as hell didn’t start with Obama. Sorry if I live in reality and you live in .. I dunno, Kumbaya Land? This whining about devotion to the Constitution is as annoying coming from the phony Left as it is the phony right.

I admire your steadfast devotion to a principal this country has never, EVER lived by. You’re a better person than me. But again, I’m a pragmatist. Never pretended to be anything else.

that Bumper Sticker is really good.

    Memory wurmhole…

When Shrub was still president, republican dicks tried to spread some lie about Clinton having a chance to “get” Bin Laden which he passed up.

Another thing I am not likely to forget anytime soon was a photo of a group of soldiers in Iraq holding up a sign that read “911 PAYBACK.” They took it very seriously that Saddam Hussein needed to be taken to account for September 11, 2001. Judging by Romney’s conservative romance with Benjamin Netanyahu, he probably is much more aligned with attacking Iran and Iraq than routing out Bin Laden. Didn’t Bush say something like, “I don’t know where he is and I don’t really care.?” What did he do with the presidential brief, “Bin Laden Determined to attack in U.S.?”

I like the way they dumped his body overboard in a leaky casket. Davy Jones Locker.

      Oh I remember that!!

I heard the authors of the article on NPR this morning. Now I really want to read their book.

  9. YOU GO, GIRL ! ! ! I marched in our March for Women here on SATURDAY wearing my 2008 Obama hat and my “Women for Obama” tee shirt, got to address the rally and asked: How many of your relatives are FEMALE? President Obama is the one person that fights for women and will fight for us and our children” ! And yes, the war on women is definitely real…if you don’t believe it, just read the “Personhood Bill” that chicken S**T Haslam will allow to be entered into LAW without his signature. Or the law that will charge doctors with a felony if he helps a female from age 12 to ??? end a pregnancy…as well as charging the female as a criminal. GET OUT THE VOTE people. The TEA PARTY creeps now control both our Senate and our HOUSE. DEFEND WOMEN”S rights to exist as a human being.

  10. As I recall, Bush used this image (or film footage from this) of a young girl from our area whose mother was in NY for business on 9/11 and died in the towers. Just sickening.

  11. Here’s the actual ad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWA052-Bl48 – can you imagine if Obama did something this cynical?
